Personal Description:
ONLINE, IN-PERSON, OR PRE-RECORDED VIDEO LESSONS AVAILABLE
I'm an experienced fiddle player and folk singer with a diverse musical background, performing regularly across the UK and Europe. I started out studying classical violin, working my way through the Grade system, but during my A-Level Music studies, my passion shifted towards folk traditions.
I went on to study violin and voice for four years as part of Newcastle University's Folk and Traditional Music degree, graduating with a 2:1 BA (Hons). During my time there, I had the privilege of learning from renowned tutors, including Catriona MacDonald, Stewart Hardy, Kathryn Tickell, and Anna Massie (violin), as well as Chris Coe, Sandra Kerr, Nancy Kerr, and James Fagan (voice). I performed at The Sage Gateshead and in folk clubs across the North East, gaining invaluable experience on stage.
Now, I perform professionally as part of The Trio alongside mandolin player Nic Zuppardi and guitarist Aaren Bennett. I also work as a freelance session musician and composer.
Tutoring Experience:
I have 15 years experience teaching 1:1 lessons from the age of 6 - 70. A range of beginners and advanced players. I have experience teaching both classical styles, as well as already seasoned classically trained players who want to explore playing in various folk styles.
As well as private 1:1 lessons, I have experience running workshops in schools, and at major folk festivals, as well as summer schools. These include vocal training workshops, songwriting, arranging, composing tunes, learning a tune by ear, and working as part of a big band.
Tutoring Approach:
I specialise in English, American, and Scandinavian tunes and styles of playing, however am capable of teaching Irish/Scottish and French styles of playing. I also use the fiddle to accompany myself vocally, so am able to teach techniques such as chopping, and chugging patterns. Training a students musical ear and ability to understand what they hear is a primary focus in my lessons, with limited aid of sheet music to start off with.
I take a pedagogical approach with regards to my teaching; tayloring lessons to an individual rather than following a set 'one size fits all' method. With regards to vocal tuition, my focus is on helping students free their voice and discover their unique sound. I provide coaching across a range of styles and genres, with an emphasis on vocal conditioning to improve breath support, range, agility, and stability.
