Personal Description:
Fran recently completed postgraduates from the Royal College of Music and Royal Holloway University of London and has already enjoyed 10 years of teaching alongside her performance work. She is an opera singer and recitalist, has held choral scholarships in London, and privately teaches singing and piano.
Tutoring Experience:
In her 10 years of 1-1 teaching, Fran has mostly worked with students aged 11-18, although Fran's students range in age from 5 to 83. As well as 1-1 lessons, Fran has teaching experience in a range of settings. She directed and coached the principal singers Sir William Borlase's Grammar School's senior musical, Sweeney Todd, in 2019. She also worked as a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, helping neurodiverse young people with specific needs in reading, verbal skills, writing and maths. This experience has given Fran unique teaching methods applied to the musical score for a fresh approach to reading music.
Tutoring Approach:
Fran has a life-long passion for music, and a strong ethic to nurture her students’ general musicianship, as well as their performance technique. Fran’s academic and professional background in psychology enriches her teaching to create engaging and dynamic lessons tailored to individual learning style. She believes that general musicianship (including listening and sight-reading skills) and performance technique are important to seeing one’s own progression in music, but takes a holistic and flexible approach to fit individual strengths. Fran sets clear and achievable targets in a weekly practice plan to give students momentum towards their big picture goals. She also has a particular interest in performance anxiety management, a topic in which she ran practical workshops during her postgraduate at Royal Holloway University. Fran loves teaching, believes music is something that belongs to everyone, regardless of age or ability, and always underpins her lessons with confidence building and a sense of fun.
