Personal Description:
Emma grew up in Dublin, showing an enthusiasm for playing music from a young age. She began learning flute at the age of seven in her local music school and began teaching herself piano at the age of nine. In 2015, she completed her Bachelor of Music in performance under the tutelage of Ciaran O’Connell at DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama. During her undergraduate she took part in masterclasses with William Bennett, Adam Walker, Ian Clarke and Wissam Boustany and performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles.
Emma was a multiple prize winner in competitions across Ireland. She was nominated to represent DIT as a semi-finalist in the Freemasons Irish Young Musician of the Year competition 2014 and in the RDS Rising Stars Concert Series with trio ‘Aoibhneas’. In 2014, she received a scholarship to attend the Young Artists Programme at the Clandeboye Festival where she studied with Michel Lethiec.
In 2016, Emma received a scholarship to attend Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying flute under Sarah Newbold, where she has recently completed her MA in Music Therapy. During her training, she had placements on an inpatient ward for older age adults with a range of mental health and age-related illnesses, and in a mainstream primary school with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Emma is now working as a music therapist in a primary school for children with profound and multiple learning disabilities. She also works as a freelance flute and piano teacher, and classical and folk flute player. Emma is passionate about the variety of ways music can be used within different settings and multidisciplinary teams to promote health and well-being, and using music to address non-musical needs or goals.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over 10 years experience performing and teaching music to children and adults of all ages and abilities, both in Ireland and in London. I do regular peripatetic teaching and private teaching of flute, piano and music theory across London.
Tutoring Approach:
I understand that every student and their learning process is very unique and am passionate about findings new ways of working and learning from others in order to adapt to student’s individual needs.
I am very happy to prepare students for exams but also understand that some may prefer a more casual approach.
