Personal Description:
I am a friendly, enthusiastic and engaging music teacher and professional musician with ten years of teaching experience with all ages and abilities. I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I graduated with a first class BMus Honours degree as well as receiving a concert recital diploma. I also took part in a teaching skills course as part of my degree. I have Grade 8 Distinctions in Piano and Recorder.
I am also a professional performer playing with a range of ensembles including The Emily Band, Alma, The Dufay Collective, Joglaresa the A3 Ceilidh Band and the twice BBC Young Folk Award nominated Sisters. I have also played for theatre and opera, which has included positions such as principal recorder for operas at Glyndebourne and as a multi-instrumentalist in productions at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, The Apollo Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue and the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Tutoring Experience:
I have 10 years teaching experience in schools and music centres, as well as in private tuition. I teach instrumental, curriculum and general musicianship lessons from age 4 to adult and cover all abilities. Many of my students have entered exams, with most gaining merits and distinctions. I am also a specialist early years music teacher and I have been trained by the organisation Boppin Bunnies. Over the years I have worked for a number of music services and schools, as well as for the Centre for Young Musicians and the English Folk Song and Dance Society. I currently work for Trinity College of Music and Hereward House School. I also teach on a number of courses including Dartington International Summer School, The Folkworks Summer School and Aldeburgh Young Musicians.
Tutoring Approach:
My music lessons are normally a mix of aural and reading as I feel that it is important to develop both this skills to help students progress. I like to allow students to be creative as well as learning piece written by others. I encourage them to take responsibility and help to make decisions about pieces/genres and what they want to develop in their learning. This improves motivation and has a positive knock on effect with practice. Most importantly, my lessons are a fun positive experience and I tailor them to each student according to what I think will help their development and what they will enjoy. Some students prefer regular goals such as performances and exams (most of my students achieve distinction/merit), and others prefer not to share their music with audiences, and have different aims such as learning a particular piece etc. What is most important is that students are having a positive musical experience with a sense of achievement.
