Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Dexter, and I'm originally from Portsmouth but am now based in Catford, South London. As a musician, I play with my own bands, as a session musician and I also perform solo. I have gigged across the UK and in Europe at venues, functions, and festivals. My some highlights include Green Man festival for PREGOBLIN in 2022, Victorious festival with my own band DXTA in 2019, and Reading and Leeds festivals for Misty Miller in 2014.
I hold a master's degree with Merit in Popular Music Practice from the British Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) in Brighton, a 1st class bachelor's degree in Creative Musicianship from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London, as well as a CertHE and Higher Diploma from the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford.
From 2018-2019, I also ran 'Bad Bear Studio' - a rehearsal and recording studio in Gosport (near Portsmouth). There I produced bands and ran recording sessions, as well as working as the in-house mixing and mastering engineer.
I love music, and helping others how grow technically and creatively, and with my experience and qualifications I have lots to pass on!
Tutoring Experience:
I teach both Rock School and University of West London / RGT grades from preliminary grade to grade 8. I compose my own lesson plans and tailor these to each individual student accommodating for their needs. I teach music theory, technique, songs and songwriting skills. I also teach bass and production, and have helped students successfully pass their BIMM auditions, do their first gigs, and help students to grow within a band setting and one student won the Southampton University battle of the bands in 2022. I have been a self-employed tutor for over 11 years, and have taught all ages and abilities along the way!
Tutoring Approach:
I believe learning music should be fun as well as educational! I like to show students songs, theory or techniques they can get excited about, because if you're excited about playing, you're more likely to practice and improve faster. Within this setting I try to give my students lots to practice, and find the balance between pushing you to improve, but not bombarding you so it feels like there's too much to take in. In general, my lessons will go from tuning and warming up, to learning theory, songs, or working on grades, then at the end of the lesson performing what we've learned together to give the lesson an enjoyable ending, whilst giving positive and constructive feedback along the way.
