Personal Description:

I was encouraged by my flute teacher to start teaching, and have been teaching beginners for the last few years.

If you've ever fancied playing in an orchestra, I attend a friendly community orchestra every week and have performed with them in concerts and children's theatre accompaniment. It's a great way to play and improve your music skills and a fantastic experience for students of all ages in a safe, encouraging environment surrounded by musicians of all abilities.

I first picked up the flute when I was in my teens. I did the usual; played around with it a bit then gave up and found reading music very difficult. Fast forward to my 30s when I was older, wiser, and more patient. I picked it back up again and am now working towards Grade 8.

I also play the Chinese Xiao, a bamboo/wooden ancient flute and am eager to introduce more people to other types of flutes the world has to offer.

Tutoring Experience:

I teach for a living, but not in music. Since 2018 I've been teaching both children and adults how to train their dogs and live a happy life with their canine companions. Every one of my clients has different strengths and weaknesses, different challenges and different ways in which they learn - and that's just the humans.

My job means I'm very experienced in teaching students across a wide range of skill levels and ages. Lessons are adapted to suit your individual learning ability, with plenty of encouragement where needed.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning and playing music should be fun and rewarding for you, otherwise you wouldn't do it. My aim is to make an instrument easy for you to pick up and play, but hard to put down.

I have a patient and encouraging style to teaching, helping you stay motivated and supporting you through those difficult times when you want nothing more than to fling your instrument against a wall and burst into tears of frustration (happens to us all).

Lessons are tailored to meet your individial goals and learning style. Whether you want to work through the grades, master your favourite tunes, or simply play for personal enjoyment, I can help you get started. Plus I can give you a gentle poke up the backside if you need that extra encouragement and accountability so you make the progress you're after.

If you're a visual learner and one who struggles with numbers and technical things, music theory can be very difficult. Being a visual learner myself, I break down theory and music understanding in a way that is easy to follow.
