Information About Dave - Newport teacher

Personal Description:

Hi, I am Dave and I have been a musician for 32 years. I gig regularly with my bands and I am Director of Music at a private school in Gloucestershire. I love music and I particularly love teaching music theory as it unlocks so much for a young performer when they grasp this element of music making.

Tutoring Experience:

I am a qualified secondary music teacher and have been teaching for 10 years. I am experienced at delivering GCSE and A Level music and can also assist in extra tuition in these areas, as well as ABRSM theory prep.

I spent the first 7 years of my teaching career teaching 11 - 18 year olds (including GCSE and A Level Music) and I am currently Director of Music at a prep school which means I am teaching anything up to and including 13 year olds (year 8). This means I have built up a lot of experience across all age ranges and can tailor my teaching style to suit.

Tutoring Approach:

I deliver most of my tuition online as this is often easier for myself and the pupil. It works very well and allows the pupil to work in the comfort of their own home. It also allows them to record the lesson for future reference if required, a very useful tool for exam revision.

I would consider teaching at the pupils residence if local (Newport).

In general my approach is about the fundamentals of music and ensuring the understanding of these are solid. Music theory is very much like Maths in that you need the basics on which to build your knowledge.

I work with the pupil to unlock their individual way of understanding and retaining the information, there is no one size fits all approach to teaching.
