Personal Description:
Friendly, relaxed teacher with a special interest in sight-reading, accompaniment and choral singing.
I spent many years singing professionally in various Cathedral choirs, and have dabbled in choral conducting, here in the UK and also New Zealand.
I've developed a strange penchant for electronic music in the last few years, but still love sitting down at the piano to play Bach!
Note: rates are per hour; 30 or 45 minu**Contact Detail Removed**ssons might be more appropriate - for beginners for example - and are charged £15/£20 for beginners and £17/£23 for intermediate respectively. Travel to lessons is £2 if within cycling distance, £5 within 15-mile car drive.
Tutoring Experience:
Although I'm relatively new to peripatetic music teaching (one year in NZ at an independent choir school) much of my working life has been teaching both young people and adults. I've been a qualified cycling instructor since 2014, which is a dynamic environment much like a music lesson. I also have a CELTA qualification which was put to use in Vietnam on a long-distance cycling tour!
Tutoring Approach:
My attitude to teaching is that of guided discovery - the more the student finds themselves the more rewarding it is. It is a careful balance and requires patience and knowing when to move on, particularly with younger learners to avoid frustration!
There is nothing better for a teacher than to see a student achieve something they expressly told you they couldn't do ten minutes ago! The old adage of "it's like riding a bike" holds with music - yes you need to practise to be great but the doors that open from even knowing the basics are tremendous.
