Personal Description:
I recently graduated from Cornell University (New York) with a Doctorate in Piano Performance and Music Theory. Before this, I lived in Britain for seven years. I completed my A Levels at the specialist music school Wells Cathedral School, read Music at Oxford University (1st Class Honours), and obtained a Masters in Piano Performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Distinction).
Throughout my academic journey, I have won several prizes: at Cornell, I won the John James Blackmore Prize; at the RWCMD, I won the Gilbert Prize for Piano Performance and John Roberts Memorial Award; at Oxford, I was awarded an Organ Scholarship, Academic Scholarship, and the Joan Conway Scholarship in Advanced Performance Studies.
I began learning the piano at the age of 4, progressing through the ABRSM Practical and Theory graded examinations. I was invited to perform in ABRSM High Scorers' concerts on both the piano and violin, and hold an LRSM in Piano Performance. My performing experience spans solo and concerto performances, accompaniment, chamber music, and orchestral playing, with experience and prizes in international competitions and festivals.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught piano, music theory, and aural skills in Singapore, the UK, and the United States. My students have ranged from young children (as young as 4 years old) to adults. I have also taught at university level. I have successfully prepared my students for public recitals and ABRSM Practical and Theory examinations.
Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring approach is flexible and student-centred. In collaboration with you, we tailor lesson plans to align with your unique strengths, goals, and learning styles. Together, we will work towards developing a strong technical foundation while also nurturing musical expression and creativity. Whether preparing for exams, performances, or simply learning for enjoyment, I work closely with my students to help them achieve their full potential, with the goal of fostering a lifelong love of music.
I believe in a holistic approach to music education. We will hone not just performance skills, but also integrate music theory and aural skills to cultivate a deeper understanding of the music you play. The goal is to equip you with the ability to be empowered through your music-making skills, and to develop a unique musical voice of your own.
I am based in Cardiff Bay, where I primarily teach from home. If there is a preference for an alternative location, this can be discussed separately.
