Personal Description:
I am a composer, researcher and tutor currently undertaking a PhD in composition at the University of Edinburgh. I studied first at the University of Oxford where I specialised in composition, orchestration, theory and analysis then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I composed my first opera. As well as my own composing I have also worked as an arranger, performer and score editor/proofreader.
I have a broad knowledge base that includes folk, rock and jazz music as well as classical music from the 17th century up to now.
I would be happy to help students of any age with composition and theory at any level from beginner up to university and for any purpose including grades, school exams, University (including Oxbridge) entrance exams, university or just for personal enjoyment.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught students up to the undergradua**Contact Detail Removed**vel in composition, theory and analysis. This involved me creating my own lesson plans and materials, giving tutorials to groups of between 2 and 10 students and then grading their final portfolio submissions.
My one-on-one tutoring experience includes 2 years of voluntary work tutoring socially disadvantaged pupils in English GCSE and A levels. All of my students saw significant improvements in their English performance and received Bs or As in their final exams.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to teach people according to their needs and interests, particularly when it comes to composition where I see my job as helping the student to realise their own ideas.
When it comes to theory, I believe (rather controversially) that music theory is fundamentally interesting and I do all that I can to pass this enthusiasm for the subject on to my students - once you realise the additional enjoyment that a little knowledge can bring to your experience of music, it can be hard to stop, which is why I'm still studying it 10 years later.
