Personal Description:
Thank you for your interest. I am Principal Bassoonist with Essex Symphony Orchestra and play with the Danzi Wind Quintet. I am Bassoon Tutor for the Essex Youth Orchestra and Essex Young People's Orchestra. I began studying myself with Essex peripatetic tutors and then with Vernon Elliott of Trinity College, London, whilst at university. I enjoy playing and teaching in equal measure and have been lucky enough to combine the two throughout my career so far.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught instrumental lessons for 30 years and have also been a specialist primary music teacher in Essex schools for 25 years, teaching whole class music and recorder lessons, conducting music festivals and organising school choirs and orchestras. I am currently the woodwind tutor in primary schools in Chelmsford and Little Baddow and in secondary schools in Westcliff. I live in Wickford, Essex, which is within easy reach of Brentwood, Shenfield, Billericay, Southend and Rayleigh. I tutor pupils aged 7 to adult on bassoon (and mini bassoon/short reach bassoon) clarinet, flute and music theory at home on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and during the day on Thursdays. I take descant recorder pupils from the age of 5.
Tutoring Approach:
I teach every pupil according to their wishes and requirements, progressing at a speed that best suits them, generally teaching towards ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams but only if they choose. I also help school students select and prepare GCSE and A level solo performances and happily play and record duets with them for ensemble performances.
Many adult students choose not to take exams so, instead, we aim for developing skills and technique so that they can play music of their own choice as well as suggestions from me and we have established a termly ensemble which brings like minded learners together for an enjoyable afternoon of music making.
I hope to pass on not only my knowledge and expertise but also my enthusiasm for music and in particular for the fantastic instruments that my pupils have chosen to learn.

Our sessions are enjoyable and fun, with lots to take away to practice independently, and I feel that I making really good progress.
Catherine is an absolutely fantastic music teacher. She is very nice and always smile when she was teaching. My daughter feels very comfortable and confident at her lesson. Also she is a very experienced and organized teacher. She works very passionately and love music very much.
My daughter has made great progress in playing flute. I strongly recommend her be your musci teacher.
Catherine started teaching my daughter the bassoon approx. one year ago. At the time she could only play very simple melodies using 3 notes. Within a year, my daughter was able to take her grade 5 bassoon and got a distinction. I fully recommend Catherine as a bassoon teacher.
