Personal Description:
CJ is an experienced, passionate, and committed piano teacher, who has developed a total fascination for and devotion to the instrument ever since his studies as a child. His talent and enthusiasm for the piano developed surprisingly quickly from its initial stages, which started at the relatively late age of 11. He was self-taught at first for a few years, though later recognised the need to be guided under a tutor, and went to study under a local teacher. In the space of under three years, he passed grade 5-8 examinations with Distinction, as well as a Diploma in Piano Performance from the London College of Music (Dip.LCM), which attained a 95% result. His alma mater include the prestigious junior department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (piano, composition) and the University of Manchester (MusB Hons Music, First Class Honours; MusM Musicology, Distinction). He has had the privilege to study under eminent concert pianists Stephen Coombs and Andrew Wilde. His bachelor degree studies were consistently characterised by the very high standard of his performances, his participation in masterclasses, and success in competition environments. He has performed some of the most challenging repertoire in the piano literature, including concertos, and has experience performing at the harpsichord both in solo and orchestral contexts.
Tutoring Experience:
I have experience in teaching a range of abilities. This has included absolute beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, young and mature, and everything in between. I have taught classes of children, and helped to prepare students studying on GCSE and A Level Music courses (all exam boards). I am happy to cater to a student's particular musical interests, and equally comfortable guiding individuals through graded examinations (which includes very high distinction results). I also particularly welcome those preparing for auditions to study at conservatoire.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is, by necessity, tailored to each individual student, their own musical interests, and their needs; no two approaches to my teaching are the same. I place importance on calm and focus, but also on fun and enjoyment, since I believe an appropriate balance of these qualities yields the greatest long-term success for the piano. It is incredibly important for me to develop your 'musical' ear alongside the manual dexterity of the fingers, and to encourage your musical curiosities through the music we learn and study. These were the key components to my own rapid development and success at the piano, and with enough discipline and determination from the student, I believe there is no reason why they cannot achieve similar results. While I am a classically-trained pianist, I am very happy to teach other styles, including jazz and popular song, of which I also have experience.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review. From my perspective, it was a sheer joy to aid your development and get you the (high) Distinctions you were capable of in both your Grade 5 Theory and Practical exams; your unrelenting passion, determination and discipline for the instrument as a student during the time in which I taught you made the tuition process incredibly rewarding. It was a privilege to teach you during my undergraduate days, and I am so pleased you have gone on to pursue all you have in music since then!
Best wishes,
CJ
Massive progress within a short period of time and Gabriel is really enjoying the lessons
We are hoping to work with CJ for long time and I will highly recommend him
It is a pleasure to teach Gabriel and watch him develop and progress quickly in lessons. I cannot wait to see how he develops, and I am pleased he is enjoying the lessons!

Thanks for this kind review. It was a pleasure to support your son with his Grade 3 studies for a year, and I was very pleased to know that he continues to enjoy music-making at school.
Best wishes,
CJ
He is a outstanding pianist with encyclopedic knowledge of all the classic piano pieces and also able to offer advice on correct posture and technique whilst playing piano. Thoroughly recommended!
Thank you very much for this very kind and generous review. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch you grow and develop as a musician and pianist, and your concentration, perseverance and determination is both impressive and inspiring! Your progress has been immense and I look forward to helping you further to realise your musical ambitions.
Keep up the good work and developing from strength to strength!
Best,
CJ
One of my main anxieties as a student was that any given piece of music was simply beyond me; I couldn't imagine how it could possibly be playable. But CJ had a way of making things seem not only achievable but inevitable.
He was able to meet me exactly where I was; I already had some ability on the piano and I'd had piano teachers in the past who wanted to pull me back to Grade 1 and go from there.
CJ, however, had no problem starting me off on the Grade 5 syllabus and getting me through that exam comparatively quickly. He also took time out of his busy schedule to provide the necessary music theory tuition so I could get my Grade 5 in that discipline before sitting the practical exam, all whilst studying as an undergraduate at University.
It was also a great privilege to study under CJ's tuition because he is himself a great pianist. His insight and understanding of the instrument was supported by his passion; his knowledge of the repertoire and the history of Western classical music.
To study under CJ's guidance would be a gift to students of all levels.
