Personal Description:
I was born in Hammersmith, and raised on the outskirts of London before moving to the home counties in 1984, and settling in the west country ten years later. I was introduced to music from the age of about 18 months old by musical parents and had my first clarinet lesson at the age of eight, when I began my classical studies, and later on with saxophone, which resulted in Grade 8 Distinction on both instruments.
Having studied the history of the clarinet, in particular, I developed a love for Mozart and conversely, I also began playing jazz and exploring improvisation.
Throughout my teenage years, I enjoyed many opportunities performing with other musicians, at the Royal Albert Hall, London Festival Hall, Westminster Hall, Australian Embassy, (to name but a few), which were to have a lasting effect on my approach to teaching, a few years later.
Tutoring Experience:
With over twenty years of music teaching experience, including independent and state schools, I teach students of all ages (5-82 years of age) and abilities, from beginners to professional level … (recorder lessons are also available for children of Primary School age). I am happy to share my expertise and encouragement as students explore all genres of music, as well as preparing them for ABRSM Practical Examinations (Grades 1-8) and ABRSM Theory of Music Examinations (up to Grade 5).
My passion is to ensure that all students are given the opportunity of receiving a thorough foundation on their chosen instrument, from a friendly, patient teacher who will enable them to progress and experience the joy of playing a musical instrument.
Tutoring Approach:
We are all unique! And so is our taste in music, our goals, our learning pace, and our abilities! I have taken all this into account.
I am very excited about the subject of music and it’s a joy to impart my knowledge and be a part of helping a new student become a musician, and express themselves through the language of music, which is like no other … it is literally universal !
Welcome to one of my lessons … it is a comfortable, peaceful atmosphere enabling each student to focus as they learn about their chosen instrument from a friendly, patient teacher that is willing to work “as a team”.
ABRSM Practical / Theory of Music Examinations
These are optional for all students.
I have a 100% pass rate, 55% of which have been Distinctions.
Fun ! - Music Your Way!
For those students that are looking for light relief between exams, or for students not wishing to take exams at all, I am happy to teach all genres.
I am able to write a student’s chosen piece of music, including provision of backing track at minimum cost, so that they can gradually build their own repertoire of favourites to simply play for their own pleasure, or perform!
There are often opportunities to perform in small or large ensembles, as well as fundraising days when myself and students play music to raise money for local charities.
A wonderful opportunity to play publicly without having the pressure of being in the spotlight and also to see music making a difference within our community!
