Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Asaph, and I work as a musician in jazz and improvised music. The majority of my work is performing music in venues around the country with various groups. I also run 'Oso Jazz Nights', a part time jazz club based in Cranfield, Bedfordshire.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught a few private students, as well as being the assistant tutor on the Falmouth Jazz Summer School 2019, which involved giving a masterclass to the bass students, and giving some one on one lessons.
Part of my teaching experience is that of being a student: I have had many hours of lessons from a range of great musicians and teachers including Mark Hodgson, Tom Martin, Mike Williams, Joe Martin, Percy Pursglove, Liam Noble, Arnie Somogyi, Dave Holland, and this experience has given me a perspective on what makes lessons useful, engaging, and interesting.
Tutoring Approach:
In the lessons I offer, we can cover:
- double bass technique
- double bass playing in the jazz idiom
- improvising (applicable to any instrument)
- music appreciation
- practising
Although my principle instrument is the double bass, I also play piano and drums, and teach jazz, improvising and music theory to any instrument.
The lessons are tailored to your interests and needs, and are an open dialogue between us- I don't teach a 'method' from a book or fixed school. Between us, we can work out your particular needs: whether that is a structured approach with a more rigid plan of development, or a more open, conversational, and reactive approach.
Different stages of musical (and personal) development suit different approaches to practise and work (I'm still working on this too- and always will be) and throughout the course of the lessons we will consider where you are in your development and which approach will be most beneficial.
If you'd like a lesson, send me an email or give me a ring and we can arrange for a free video call to discuss further.
