Personal Description:
I am an experienced teacher of over 15 years and musician for over 30 years. I have achieved Grade 8 in piano and music theory and Grade 6 in violin, (all ABRSM).
I also have experience in teaching GCSE Music (AQA and Edexcel) and A level music. I am also experienced in teaching BTEC Music at Level 2 and Level 3. I am currently the Lead IV for my department in Music.
I have also begun to offer consultancy work with new Heads of Department and NQTs to provide more confidence in the classroom. This is entirely from a subject specialist perspective.
Outside of teaching I am a gigging musician working with 2 specific bands, one in Leicester and one in Northamptonshire. I am also a session musician and worked with signed bands in the East Midlands area.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over 15 years of teaching in various institutions. I have been a Head of Department at an Independent school and a Music teacher at an academy. I have also been a Course Leader at an FE college. In my fifteen years of teaching I have also continued to teach 1-2-1 lessons and have taught from the ages 5 years upwards.
In my last two teaching posts Independent School and Academy), I was part of the ISI and OFSTED inspections where both schools achieved EXCELLENT and OUTSTANDING respectively. Having been allowed to ask for feedback from ISI… inspectors remarked that my teaching was '… innovative… ' and '… teaching methods never seen before in an independent school… ' In internal inspections at both these schools I have been awarded Excellent and Outstanding.
My strengths in my teaching is reflecting and improving my lessons for next time. I also believe that I adapt quickly enable a student achieves the best they can.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to music tuition is holistic and what the individual wants. I believe learning an instrument provides confidence, self discipline and dedication. I also believe that learning an instrument can take away the pressure of studying or working. I am completely open to how an individual learns but am also realistic in terms of what I want a student to achieve. I recognise that young people and adults cannot practice everyday but practice that is little and often can provide sufficient progression and confidence more effectively. I introduce a strong technique very early on and ensure that reading notes becomes a skill that can be carried across other instruments.
