Personal Description:

My instrumental learning began at the age of 6 in my local brass band in Lancashire. This eventually led to graduating from Newcastle University with a First Class Honours degree in Music. Originally trained in classical music, I spent a lot of my degree and afterwards branching out into different genres and playing in various settings. I spent years touring the UK and Europe in a band for which I wrote and recorded brass parts.

I currently play in a band which focuses primarily on the New Orleans/Second Line style of music. We play gigs regularly around the North East, with a focus on the importance of this style of music and history. We are working with the University to expose young musicians to this kind of music and to also bring it in to educational settings. I also play in Pit bands for musical productions each year, this includes shows such as West Side Story and Les Miserables.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching both instrumental and theory lessons in the North East since 2016 both privately and at the Northern Music Centre, where I am also the head of brass tuition.

I deliver brass lessons in both High schools and Primary schools across the North East, as well as working as the Head of Brass tuition for In Harmony, a project ran by Sage Gateshead. During this time, I have guided and supported numerous students through graded exams, from Grade 1 to 8, including music theory.

Tutoring Approach:

My extensive experience in different genres and performance settings means that I can give students a holistic music tuition and also find the genre/style which they prefer or want to play. Playing an instrument is an art and it is important they are playing something that they enjoy, and can use to express themselves. My teaching experience has been with students of all ages and capabilities, meaning I am very flexible.
