Personal Description:
Hi, I’m Jackel, originally from Hong Kong, and I’m about to graduate from Royal Holloway, University of London, where I study music. I was awarded the Piano Scholarship for two consecutive years and hold both an ATCL in Piano Performance and an LMUSTCL in Music Theory. Alongside my studies, I’ve been teaching both piano and music theory for over two years, working with students of various levels to support their development in both technique and musical understanding.
I’m particularly interested in composition and orchestration. I enjoy writing music that conveys emotion and narrative, and I often rearrange and orchestrate pieces using Sibelius. My work Looping Life reflects on the contrast between ideal dreams and repetitive daily life. I regularly share my compositions and orchestrations on platforms like YouTube to document my creative process and connect with other musicians.
As part of my teacher training, I worked with the organiser of Thinking Music at Baydon St. Nicolas Primary School, supporting music education and working closely with students, including those with SEN. I also visited schools like Staines Laleham to gain further classroom experience. In addition, I’ve worked as part of the Front of House team for concerts at Royal Holloway, gaining insight into how events are managed and delivered.
Tutoring Experience:
I’ve been teaching both piano and music theory for over two years, working with students at different levels and tailoring lessons to fit their individual needs. Through this, I’ve developed a strong sense of how to support students not just in technical skills but also in building their confidence and musical expression. As part of my teacher training, I worked with the organiser of Thinking Music at Baydon St. Nicolas Primary School, where I assisted in classroom music sessions and supported pupils, including those with special educational needs. I also had the opportunity to visit schools like Staines Laleham, which gave me further insight into how music is taught in different settings. These experiences helped me understand how to adapt my approach to suit each learning environment, and confirmed how much I enjoy working with young people through music.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to music tuition is all about making lessons engaging, flexible, and suited to each individual student. I believe that learning music should be enjoyable and motivating, so I always try to build lessons around what the student is interested in, while still making sure they develop a solid foundation in technique and theory. Whether I’m teaching piano or music theory, I aim to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions, try things out, and learn from mistakes. I also like to include creative elements—like encouraging students to improvise, analyse music they enjoy, or explore composition—so that they can connect more personally with what they’re learning. Most importantly, I want every student to feel a sense of progress and confidence, no matter their starting point.
