Personal Description:

I am an Oxford graduate (English language and literature, first class), as well as a qualified English teacher, and have been tutoring since 2013.

I graduated from the University of Oxford with a double first in English language and literature, winning the prize for the best performance in English finals at Mansfield College, and the college essay prize. At school, I was awarded eleven GCSEs at A-star and three A-levels at A. As well as tutoring, I have worked as a researcher, a copywriter, and a proofreader. I have also completed a PGCE in secondary English at the UCL Institute of Education, the highest-ranking college of education in the world (‘QS World University Rankings’), during which I taught all age groups at two west London secondary schools, and received A’s for my master’s-level assignments. I am currently pursuing a PhD in English literature at the University of Buckingham.

In my spare time I enjoy cycling, writing, and photography.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring since 2013, teaching English at all levels (including degree level), as well as A-level religious studies. I have taught AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, and CAIE (Cambridge International), and am constantly familiarising myself with the new texts that my students are studying. And I have experience helping students who have autism and ADHD.

During my teacher training, I taught all age groups at two west London secondary schools. While at Oxford, I was part of an ‘e-mentoring’ scheme to help candidates from schools without a history of Oxbridge applications. At College, Brecon, I ran two series of seminars, for sixth-formers studying RS and English literature.

Teaching Approach:

I am not multilinguist but I can help you if you are looking to improve the sophistication of your English for exams, the workplace, or anything else. I mainly do this through conversation of ideas, culture and books, supplemented with suggested reading and feedback on writing, including CVs, cover letters, etc.

During sessions I draw on what I have loved doing, informally, since I was at school, namely discussing and explaining the nuances of English with my bilingual and multilingual friends.

As well as improving your or your child’s English, I can help with the following:

• Oxbridge entrance (the admissions process, practice interviews, the ELAT, etc.)
• Essay surgery – how to structure and write an essay
• How to revise – note-taking, organisation, making connections, committing to memory
• Grammar, punctuation, and style (a.k.a. ‘usage and abusage’)
• Speech-writing and public speaking
• Proofreading and redrafting essays
• Suggested reading and resources
• How to annotate, analyse (and enjoy) English literature
• If you’d specifically like written feedback on your writing – more like a correspondence course – then I can provide that.

From Philip (5/5): Josh was very helpful as a tutor for my English A-Level as he improved my wider knowledge of the literature that I was studying with extremely helpful insights on context and criticism which I had previously struggled with. The sessions together were enlightening on the texts and I was able to understand it in a way that my classes at school may not have given me, and this different perspective added nuance to my essay writing. His marking and feedback on the essays I sent in were incredibly useful, and going through it together in sessions helped me solidify my knowledge and improve. The essay plans on past questions were also very helpful for my confidence ahead of the exams as I had some great quotes from critics and the texts as well as useful context that I felt as though I could skilfully use in the exam. I secured the grade that I needed for my university offer, so thank you for the help and support.
