Personal Description:

ONLINE LESSONS AVAILABLE - FIRST LESSON FREE - This is an opportunity for me to assess your level and expectations and for you to decide if you are happy with me and my teaching methods.

I have a purpose classroom, with whiteboards etc and a wealth of teaching material. This creates and strong learning environment which benefits learning.

As a speaker of four languages I know what it feels like to be a student as well as a teacher, so I like to ensure my lessons are not boring but also not just fun and no learning development happens.

Teaching Experience:

2017 to date In these three years I have students pass GCSE and A- Levels, including 3 people who took their GCSE a year early.

2015-date teaching Mandarin at a local private school.

2006-date Having moved to the UK I have taught at BBC Worldwide, London Conversation Piece, Basingstoke Queen Mary College, as well as numerous one to one classes for adults and children of all levels from holiday conversations, academic like GCSE & A Levels and professional usage such as legal, museums etc.

Because it is important to Not be complacent and look to develop new skills; in August 2015 I travelled to China to attend a Teacher Development course at Beijing Language & Culture.

2001-2005 Qualified as a Mandarin teacher at the Taipei Langauge Insitute and taught people from the UK, USA, Japan and numerous other countries.

Teaching Approach:

Every student is different so whilst my all classes cover the basics, they all are developed to personally meet your requirments and expectations.
I use various teaching methods, such as role play, newspapers, **Contact Detail Removed**vision episodes, even a trip to chinese resturant as well as a variety of text books and mock tests.
I will explain the grammer and how culture effects the language.
I speak with the standard correct Chinese pronouciation and use both simplified and traditional characters and even classical.
It is important to me that you both enjoy the classes but also see your Chinese develop.
Naturally lessons will cover, talking, reading, writing, listening

From Michael (5/5): We have only had two lessons so far but find Hui-Mei's introduction and explanations of Mandarin very helpful it beginning this journey.

From Alun (5/5): Hui-Mei is excellent as a tutor because she not only teaches the language but helps me understand the logic of Chinese thought, and this helps me to learn the key phrases and words. She understands English perfectly so is good at explaining things in English, which again helps speed up the learning process. She does a lot of practical sessions such as questions and answers on key themes such as ordering food in restaurants, talking to taxi-drivers etc.
Moreover, she tailors the lesson to my stated need, namely to acquire some conversational Chinese rather than trying to learn literary Chinese which would involve lengthy study of the Chinese characters.

From Gillian (4/5): I wanted to learn basic Mandarin so that when I travelled to China I could at the very least be polite.
Hui-Mei was very flexible in setting up our lessons so that I could learn what I needed to for a short trip rather than being forced into traditional way of learning from scratch.
This allowed us to create a lesson plan based around my holiday plans and questions and conversation for this trip.
We concentrated on travel essentials such as food, currency, basic greetings etc which was essential as I only had a 9 week time frame to learn.

From Paul (5/5): Hui-Mei is very good. She engages well and the lessons are lively and enjoyable. A lot of Chinese is spoken by both pupil and teacher to build up listening and speaking skills. She writes in Chinese and pinyin to build up reading skills (and in due course writing). Each lesson has plenty of content. She carefully established the level I was at so that the lessons were pitched right.

She has given him very practical feedback on improving his essays and also a plan for making progress in reading, listening and speaking.
