Personal Description:
I am an ex-academic with a passion for teaching. I love helping students achieve their best – it is so rewarding to see them improve and to make sure it's fun and interesting along the way.
Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring for 21 years. My other teaching experience includes lecturing and supervising at Cambridge and volunteering to teach English in South America.
===Teaching experience===
2003 - ongoing: private tutor
2021: volunteer coaching for Oxbridge interviews
2014-2017: junior academic at University of Cambridge
2016: seminar at UCL
2009: volunteer teacher in Ecuador
2008: volunteer teacher in Paraguay
===Publications===
2017: 'Learn English: Improving Spoken English Book 1' (available on Amazon under my maiden name)
2016: learning resource for Oxbridge applicants to Modern and Medieval Languages (HE+: 'Saudade: that untranslatable feeling')
2016: academic article for Journal of Anglo-Portuguese Studies
2011: script for educational Portuguese DVD about Fair Trade for Portuguese schools ('Vidas e Dúvidas no Mundo do Chocolate')
Teaching Approach:
I believe in making lessons fun and the language learned relevant to the individual students' needs. Practical use of the target language is central from the start, making it a real tool for communication, which is great for overcoming initial shyness. Alongside this practical approach, I help you become comfortable with grammar topics so that you can use them as the building blocks of confident, fluid communication.
I work with students to find the learning style which works best for them, and design lessons and courses around their interests. I am particularly good at helping anxious students learn how to minimise the impact of stress on their learning.

Superb!
I visit Spain a lot, so am ideally placed to practice.
Hazel is concientious and offers homework and spends time with it and is forgiving if I have not the time to do it as often as she/I would like.
I hope we shall continue working together for quite a while.
We are very happy with this arrangement.
Hazel is very patient with me - thankfully, as I am a real beginner and I assume I must be hard work!!
