Personal Description:
I am an experienced language tutor with a first class degree in Modern Languages from Southampton University as well as a TEFL qualification. I studied French, Spanish and Italian and have spent several years living and tutoring in Italy, Spain and South America. I'm a very cheerful and enthusiastic person, and most importantly, I really enjoy tutoring!
Teaching Experience:
Along with several years of tutoring experience in Spain and Italy, I also taught English as a foreign language in an Italian high school for one year, taking classes of up to 30 students. Since returning, I have continued to work in languages, including transcription and translation, as well as tutoring students of all ages. Tutoring has been my full time job for over 7 years, so you are guaranteed lessons of excellent quality.
Teaching Approach:
My background in Linguistics means that my lessons plans are unique; I will tailor classes to your needs and goals, whether you want to focus on conversation, grammar or are studying towards a particular exam. Learning French, Spanish or Italian with me, a non-native speaker, can be much more successful than learning from a native; since I have already been through the learning process myself, I understand the challenges you face and how best to overcome them. Whichever level you are at, my lessons will be aimed at being captivating and stimulating, because the more you enjoy something, the more you learn!

From Peter (/5): Gemma is a very engaging and fun teacher with a vast knowledge of Spanish culture as well as the language. In a relatively short space of time, my ability in reading, writing, listening to and speaking Spanish has increased significantly and I feel much more confident about the prospect of using the language when on holiday. Gemma's lessons are always well crafted and very practical as well as highly enjoyable. Her lessons push me and give me the confidence to speak Spanish effectively, even when I don't believe in myself. My Spanish lessons are something I look forward to every week and I would thoroughly recommend Gemma as a tutor.

From Ashley (/5): I've really enjoyed my first 6 weeks of French lessons with Gemma. Gemma tries to be as flexible as possible with the timing of our weekly lessons, so i can fit in lessons around my other commitments - she arranged a catch up session when my work commitments meant that I was unable to make a lesson in a particular week.
Gemma mixes up the format of lessons, using a variety of different lessons and learning styles. This keeps me interested and allows me to figure out how i learn best. Gemma is also always happy to answer my (many!) questions.
Perhaps most importantly, the lessons are fun and Gemma is good at keeping me motivated.

From Richard (/5): I have been learning Spanish on a weekly basis with Gemma for almost 2 years and, whilst Gemma would be better placed than me to assess my progress, I feel that I now have a good understanding of the language and of what is involved to improve further. Although the continuing pandemic has made it necessary for all classes during the last 9 months to proceed via video link, I do not feel that this has hindered my progress in any way. Gemma has an excellent knowledge of Spanish and clearly enjoys helping others to learn and improve. She is always punctual, cheerful and very patient and explains all new concepts very clearly. I would have no hesitation in recommending Gemma to anyone who wishes to either learn or improve their knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language.

From Paul (/5): Gemma worked 1:1 with an A Level Italian student… Gemma was fantastic throughout every session coming with planned tasks and very accommodating to the students needs. The student now feels confident to sit her A Level Italian exam. I would highly recommend Gemma again.

From Teresa (/5): I find Gemma to be an excellent tutor! Gemma plans and prepares lessons very well to cater for my ability (intelligence, age and speed!) using the classic "Pasos" course in Spanish. She is clearly both professional and enthusiastic in her teaching with obvious great ability and love of language. Together with the encouragement and support I receive, I always leave my lesson feeling uplifted with a great sense of achievement and feeling happy! Muchas Gracias Gemma x

She is using a variety of teaching methods including singing and performing. She checks on your revision, progress and understanding. Simply put, Gemma is the right person to teach you. From James (/5): I have only recently begun learning Spanish with Gemma and already I feel I am making good progress. In 3 lessons I am able to translate basic conversations into English and create paragraphs in Spanish with very little mistakes.
For me, the way Gemma structures the lessons works perfectly. There is a perfect balance between speaking, written and translation which works well with my style of learning. I am very happy that I found Gemma and always look forward to our lessons.
