Personal Description:
I am a Japanese national who has completed two Japanese language beginners courses (60 weeks and 20 weeks respectively) as a CACTUS language instructor at colleges based in central Liverpool and Manchester. In keeping with my professional status, I am adept at recognising how best to target my teaching approach, particularly with respect to students who have little or no knowledge of the Japanese language. In a formal course review exercise, I have received an excellent rating from my college students and business individuals (such as an NGO director and a company director) with respect to the various teaching components of the course. I also offer my students the advice and guidance for travel matters in Japan and exam/qualification preparations (the Japanese language Proficiency Test, for example).

Teaching for beginners and casual learners for more than 5 years.

60 weeks (120 hours) in beginners Japanese at language colleges in Liverpool and 20 weeks in Manchester
12 months providing English language instruction to college students in Japan
18 months English-Japanese language translator at a Japanese University
60 weeks at a business establishment (Sony Entertainment) in the North West
34 weeks with the private tuition with various company managers/directors
GCSE External examiner in May 2023
Teaching Approach:
I am able to provide personal tutoring and group tutoring (such as Sony entertainment groups) as required. First lesson will be free for the tutee who purchased 5 lessons and more. I offer Zoom teaching and am equipped with HD camera. An approachable and friendly style to engage students in fully comprehending an unfamiliar language. Tuition is provided in verbal and written Japanese using language props as an aid to understanding, with textbooks and specialist Hiragana and Kanji teaching materials. I have excellent writing skills and I am comfortable at teaching in both formal and less formal surroundings. Tuition can be arranged on a regular or irregular timetable according to the needs of the particular student(s).
I am willing to travel to business settings in the early afternoon ( morning is available, too) upon the tutee's requirement.
Home lessons and the lessons on the weekends would incur extra charges.

My wife and I are going to Japan on holiday next month and I really wanted to be able to help more with speaking while we are there (she is much more proficient than me, having lived in Tokyo for a year previously).
Akiko is extremely friendly and very encouraging and has also given me lots of cultural tips and advice for while we are there too. She has been great with understanding what level I am at from my own individual study and helping to correct any mistakes or misunderstandings I have developed as a result. I stumbled across First Tutors and that is where I met Akiko sensei. I can honestly say that my passion to learn has become even more rewarding from having regular tuition from Akiko. The most important component of all is that Akiko sensei is patient and enthusiastic about teaching. I am looking forward to developing my Japanese and learning more about Japan and it’s rich culture.

Akiko-sensei is a fantastic tutor, she incorporates her experience and knowledge of Japan into our lessons, which bring insight into what it's like living and working in Japan; and I am very thankful for it! Although I have one hour sessions weekly with Akiko-sensei, those single hours have helped me a lot in improving my reading, speaking and writing skills. She takes the time to explain everything to you and how the different aspects of the Japanese language are formed and spoken, and answer any and every question!
I was very nervous before my first lesson but within minutes Akiko-sensei had made me feel very comfortable and we were chatting away while learning! I really look forward to my lesson every week and can't wait for the next one!
I was very nervous before my first lesson but within minutes Akiko-sensei had made me feel very comfortable and we were chatting away while learning! I really look forward to my lesson every week and can't wait for the next one!

From Rob (/5): I've never had a tutor before, so had no idea what to expect. Also, the learning is remote of course (due to the current coronavirus situation). However, the lessons are very good. Mostly this is because Akiko is friendly and patient and she is, frankly, a very good teacher. I have only had 3 lessons with her so far, but imagine that I will have many more in the future. In particular, she is brilliant at explaining the subtleties of Japanese culture and language. Already, I think I'm starting to make progress, even after so few lessons.

From David (/5): Sensei is a passionate teacher with an energetic and engaging teaching style. Her obvious love of teaching shines through in her lessons and truly inspires you to push yourself as hard as you can. Her gentle encouragment and positive reinforcement of success, are a great boon to an almost complete beginner like me. At no point have I ever felt intimidated by the lessons, as sensei patiently breaks down each section and guides you through it.
All in all I would recommend Sensei as a tutor to anyone, you couldn't ask for a better guide through the pitfalls of learning the Japanese language. I feel like I have learned more in the 4 weeks of lessons I've had with her, than I did in the 4 months of personal study I tried.

She has also given me insight into the cultural side of Japan which has been very useful for my upcoming trip to Japan next year. We used the genki textbook which I had already, so I didn't have to go out and buy another one for the lessons. From Colin (/5): I wanted to learn some Japanese from a native speaker as I didn't want an anglicised version so decided to go with Akiko. I am very pleased with my lessons. Akiko is enthusiastic and positive. It takes a little while to tune in to her japanese accent but I think this is very common because of the very different syllable set the language uses. Probably a better match to beginners and/or those who like a structured approach than those looking for more advanced , freeform conversations.

Akiko went through how to pronounce the words and asked me to repeat after her which was a great way to pick up what i needed to study more after class. From Charlotte (/5): I have now had a few lessons with Akiko and I can't express how much she has already helped me progress my Japanese! We work together with a Japanese textbook via Skype and the lessons are challenging but always explained in detail and linked to previous lessons. I have found her teaching style to be relaxed and flexible and this has helped in my learning. She is very good at explaining difficult concepts and is quick to give appraisal, instilling confidence in your delivery of Japanese. She has been going at a pace decided by me and is very helpful at explaining areas I do not understand. Equally, she does not dwell on areas we both feel I understand but will recap on what I've learnt so I can retain this information better.

She is always well prepared prior to the teaching, and she utilises a wide range of teaching aids, from printouts of picture to aid the process of learning. She is a very understanding and patient teacher, and can accommte for difficulties faces when learning japanese. During language practice, she gives very constructive feedback on how to improve on your japanese language, and can keep track of the entire learning progress. She is well versed in the language, and always make the whole session enjoyable. I would strongly recommend Akiko as Japanese tutor, for anyone who is new towards Japanese language

From Marcus (/5): Whilst I only learnt with her for a short time, sadly other academic commitments took precedence, I found her demeanour very professional and she worked very diligently to create and adapt a lesson plan to my needs. I'm sure had my time commitments not been so stringent I would have gone on to enjoy many more lessons studying with her.

I thought I should tell you the reason why I didn't want to continue the Japanese lessons.
Even though I had sent you an e-mail entirely in Japanese, and had lived in Japan for half a year and studied Japanese for two and a half years (now reaching intermediate level) you wanted to start off with the basics (what is your name, where do you live, counting to 20 etc.) I didn't feel that lessons like that would be a constructive use of my time.
Also, I'm not aware if you've had any experience teaching Japanese to someone at my level, but I've realised it can be more difficult than teaching basic Japanese. If you haven't had any experience with this level of teaching, perhaps it would be better to not mention on this website that you can provide university-level teaching.
