Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Josh, and I am a lecturer in Engineering and Programming at the University of Portsmouth. I have recently finished my PhD studies in Electronic Engineering at the University of Kent. My research focuses on biometric systems (facial recognition, fingerprint interaction, etc.) when investigating performance issues and human factors.
I have over eight years of experience in the teaching field. My expertise lies in electronic systems, programming languages such as C++, C, Visual Basic and Matlab. I also teach maths and ICT skills through the ECDL program.
I suppose I am not your typical Engineer. I have years of experience teaching both young and adult learners in a variety of environments. As an Engineering Ambassador, I aim to promote all aspects of STEM through the study and practice of using technology.
Just a little bit about me, I am very friendly, approachable and caring when it comes to the welfare of all my students. I enjoy outdoor adventures such as hiking, snowboarding and cycling when I can.
Training Experience:
I currently teach the EDCL and several programming languages (C, C++ and VB.net) courses to undergraduate students at the University of Portsmouth.
I am currently employed as a lecturer at the University of Portsmouth. As well as teaching in Higher Education for over five years, I also have over eight years of experience privately tutoring students.
Previously, I have been employed as an Academic Tutor at the University of Kent. I held the position of Academic Ambassador (DBS certified) where I have previously tutored A-Level Mathematics, Physics and IT at a number of academies around the Kent area. I was also a tutor on the Step Up program, a course that is delivered to Year 12/13 students to encourage applications to university.
Prior to university, I attended the Norton Knatchbull Boys Grammar School in Ashford and as such, I had passed the 11+ exam. Throughout my time as a secondary school student, I tutored some year six students in mathematics, non-verbal and verbal reasoning tests, which I am also able to teach.

I have been asked to leave you feedback in order to allow me to find another tutor free of charge (given that I paid £25 to get your details and Fia only saw you once). You were always responsive and polite in the short time we communicated, but given that you weren't able to help, it means that our experience of this site doesn't rate highly, as I know you are aware! Hopefully I can find her another tutor now for the coming A level exam year.
Best wishes
S Hawkins
