Personal Description:
I teach programming to university physics students and organize training for researchers, as well as developing scientific software, managing a specialist IT team and contributing to research projects. I have a PhD in particle physics and specialise in using programming to analyse, visualise and understand data scientific data.
Training Experience:
I teach an introductory computing course for first-year university students, using Python to analyse data and simulate physical systems. I have also taught a third-year course in object-oriented programming using Java, and workshops on Python, relational databases and version control for researchers.
I love learning and helping others to learn, and have over 20 years of experience in universities, including teaching physics, computing and maths at a range of levels. With two children now at secondary school, I am enjoying the opportunity to go back to the foundations of these subjects, tutoring my own children and others to help them gain understanding and confidence.
Training Approach:
In my work on scientific software, as well as teaching programming at university, I take a practical approach to building working programs one step at a time without getting bogged down in convoluted code that is hard to debug. This is particularly helpful for students with little prior experience, but is also valuable for those who are more advanced, who often find they can simplify their code and get more done with less stress.
