Personal Description:
I’m a PhD candidate in linguistics at the Manchester Metropolitan University, working on formal thought disorder and linguistic creativity in schizophrenia. I studied a BA in English and Creative Writing and an MA in Professional Writing at Falmouth University prior to joining MMU.
I’m also a Survey Research Analyst at RWS Life Sciences, working on the linguistic validation of clinical outcome assessments. I was previously an independent consultant working on a range of language and communication projects.

OliverFrom Christina (3/5): We never managed to arrange a lesson after we had exchanged details and the commission to First Tutors was paid. Oliver had other commitments.

Thanks for your feedback.
We discussed your requirements before and after agreeing to proceed with tuition. After you paid the commission, we identified that you required help with a non-UK exam board, and so I suggested that a tutor more experienced in that specific board may be more appropriate. I also explained that it has become increasingly difficult for me to sustain a position of self-employment, due to not only the pandemic but also the UK government's push for tutors to have qualified teacher status under the National Tutoring Program. This has led tutoring agencies to express preferences for tutors with PGCEs, and tutoring sites like First Tutors do not result in sufficient enquiries to constitute a source of regular work.
Given this, I offered to refund your commission but, again, due to cash flow issues there has been a delay in sorting this for you. This has now been actioned.
I appreciate your frustration, but I thought it better and less disruptive to cancel before tuition began than begin only to have to cancel later.

From Sarah (/5): Unfortunately we were unable to commence any tutoring, so i cannot make comment. Our online tutoring was cancelled two days before we were due to strart. Oli has been good at responding to my emails.

This is not a personal attack / negative comment for tutor who we have not seen spoken with or used but for the system that does not flow - contact is very poor don't know whos fault this is
I feel it has been a complete waste of money as nothing for me has been gained

I understand. It looks like a combination of (1) your limited phone reception and (2) my lack of access to your e-mail address has affected our ability to arrange tuition (see below). 'JANE has been sent a copy of your contact details and should be in contact within the next 48 hours to arrange your first GCSE or National 3-5 English lesson.
The request associated with this match will remain open for a further 30 days following payment of the introduction fee, to aid communication between you and your tutee.'
Looking at our messages, I see the following:

From Juri (/5): I would 100% recommend, as he explains everything clearly even if it seems hard . He also works well with students to see how they learn and what methods suit them best and bases the lessons on the easiest way for the student to understand. Also, very flexible time and is really nice about rescheduling. Honestly the best.

From Kareem (/5): Oliver is an excellent tutor who is able to provide highly specialized support and is extremely flexible with regards to the areas which he is able to cover. I have been in the process of consulting him for a couple of months and he has been nothing short of stellar in terms of the feedback which he provides and I believe that I have learnt a lot from him. It's all going really well, he is helping me with my confidence and planning, so pleased I found him, I'm sure my grades will improve as well as my confidence and stress levels.
