Personal Description:

I'm experienced in avariety of painting and drawing techniques, from renaissance to impressionist to expressionist to conceptual to postmodern, I can give confident demonstrations of style and technique, in mediums including oil, acrylic, water colour, raw pigment, charcoal. colour pencil and graphite. I'm an expert in colour theory, anatomy and proportion and ways of approaching a project - brainstorming, journals, photographic compositions to digital manipulation, and drawing and painting styles from intuitive to precise; tonal blocks to glazes.
But I can go much further, diving into the world of aesthetics and cultural theory and social art. Art is intuitive expression - philosophy without words.
I'm an experienced,practicing, professional artist who uses all mediums to express myself. I paint from life to meditate on the nature of existence - landscapes, portraits and nudes I paint from photography, using professional models to express allegories of our human condition, often tapping into my knowledge and philosophy and mythology to tell stories without words.
I know about the art market and the compromises one has to make to pay the rent. I know I need to paint seascapes to help pay the rent, and I have been known to paint portraits on commission. My oil painting has been selected by Saatchi for an online special collection celebrating colour, and is in collections in USA, Portugal, UK and South Africa. But what I really feel compelled to make is art that reflects our human condition - my mixed media print "Year of the Mask", about the imprisonment of journalists, was selected for Mall Galleries Figurative Art Exhibition in London earlier this year, and I my withy lantern sculpture "Europa" was selected for Worthing Festival of Light in 2019.
I've been painting and drawing for decades. My Foundation in Fine art with Phil Tyler gave me and excellent grounding in all manner of art practice from collage to metal working and prints to painting. A number of summer schools at Heatherly's Art School in Chelsea provided me with broad experience of traditional drawing and painting techniques, with a focus on Portrait painting under renowned portrait artist Allan Ramsay (Winner of BP National Portrait Prize). My MA in Fine Art at Brighton University with Charlie Hooker gave me the theoretical and philosophical insights I needed to approach the most difficult subjects with confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I instructed foundation level students in drawing the figure during my Art Foundation, focusing on 'seeing shapes' and ideas of anatomic proportions, blocking in shapes and refining details, using Betty Edwards techniques for 'drawing on the right side of the brain' to break down artistic blocks. I have coached young people to use art and sketchbooks as therapy in social care settings. I've developed entry level workshops for a community art project. I've instructed a group of enthusiasts in impressionist painting in an out door setting (blue bell woods, white cliffs etc). I've collaborated with artists and models.

Teaching Approach:

Person centered, humanistic, empathic. I consult and custom-build courses for every student. I can work to curriculum if required.
For entry-level students, I have a structured approach based around my own learning of traditional art technique.
For more advanced students, I try to be led by my clients needs and intuitions, then suggests pathways to follow.
