Personal Description:

I have a long and wide range of experience in teaching art, painting and drawing with students and adults up to A level standard. Students like to succeed so I design my programs so that they encounter lots of successful experiences and I increase their challenges as their confidence grows. I teach through a wide range of materials to suit each individual. As an ex of Head of Arts in a high school, I have also taught Drama and other subjects. I play golf and tennis, play the guitar and enjoy painting and walking. I've done some children's book illustrations which have been published.

Teaching Experience:

I am a retired high school teacher of art with over 25 years of experience at teaching both GCSE and A level with excellent exam results. I was awarded an 'Outstanding' assessment from OFSTED. Some comments made about my teaching after official observations are; ' It is obvious Derek’s subject knowledge is first class' , his work with students on a 1-1 basis is excellent' , 'his enthusiasm is infectious', ' he provides a positive working environment where the students learning experience is very good indeed ! ' I have been tutoring privately for 10 years.

Teaching Approach:

My approach to teaching is built on 'Fun and Success' It's a simple philosophy which seems to work. We all like success because it's fun and if it's fun then we don't mind working hard at it !
I would prefer students to come to me where we can use my art studio, which is an ideal learning environment with on hand amenities for artwork. I can travel but this could mean extra costs to cover my travelling time and petrol.
