Personal Description:
I am a published author with a Master’s Degree in Publishing and 5+ years of copyediting experience offering tutorials, workshops and constructive editing to improve creative writing skills.
Teaching Experience:
I am experienced in working one-to-one with copyediting clients to identify areas for improvement and to offer lasting advice to aid future writing and editing skills. I am also a professional author whose published novels have been shortlisted for The Bookseller's YA Book Prize and the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and twice-nominated for the Carnegie medal for writing.
My combined academic and literary backgrounds make me uniquely suited to help you sharpen your writing skills whatever your goals, and while I am new to formal tutoring, I offer a no-commitment free first session so that you can be confident that I am the right fit for you.
Teaching Approach:
I aim to collaborate with you to understand your needs and help you achieve your personal goals. Rather than lecturing you about what 'good' writing should be, my first question will always be: 'what do you want to achieve with this piece?' This way I can adapt my techniques to your goals and help you elevate your writing skills while maintaining your own unique style.
Before the first session, I will ask for a sample of your writing (up to 2,000 words) and I will carry out an in-depth edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, tone and style. Feedback will then be provided in a one-hour tutorial in which we can also discuss your goals and what you hope to achieve with your writing, so that we can identify any areas for improvement together.
After the first session, any further tutoring will be tailor-made to your needs. I may suggest tasks and exercises based on your work, and offer in-depth tutorials for particular areas you need clarification on. Or, if you are working on a large-scale project such as a novel, we can arrange further editorial workshops that focus on sharpening your writing such as chapter-by-chapter feedback tutorials.
