Personal Description:
I'm passionate about art and helping students develop their personal creative process.
As an artist I work primarily in drawing which then leads into print making, painting, stop frame animation and illustration. I've worked and exhibited in London, Bristol, Barcelona, Mexico City and Xi'an China. I've illustrated 17 children's books, three of which I am also author. My drawing is rooted in live observation but I also work from memory and my imagination. Themes include cityscape, landscape, dreams and autobiographical narrative. My native language is English but I am also fluent in Spanish so can teach in either language.
Teaching Experience:
I will be offering classes online at present.
I have ten years experience teaching for the Royal Drawing School and it's Trinity Buoy Wharf Foundation course, Community Interest Company Workshop 305 London, the London School of Economics, Catic Mexico City and online with London Drawing, Ata Creativity Global Agency and one on one stop frame animation guidance for an RCA student. I've delivered workshops in Jalisco Juvenile Prison for young male offenders, on the IIFA residency Modinagar India, Art Reach India, the Hall School London and the Hay on Wye Literary festival. I've taught all ages and people from many different backgrounds and with a range of skills and abilities. I've delivered classes in hand drawn stop frame animation, book binding, picture book making, a variety of printmaking techniques, sculpture, life drawing, portraiture and on site street drawing. I've taught in museums such as the National Gallery London, Somerset House, the British Museum, the Ashmoleum Oxford and the Foundling Museum London.
Teaching Approach:
I tailor my classes to the needs of the student or group. Classes often begin with warm up activities and when drawing from observation these may well involve approaches employed in order to begin to engage with actual looking and hopefully letting go of worrying about an end product. I strongly believe in helping to encourage and nurture each student's ability and confidence in their creativity whilst also challenging them to take risks and push themselves in order to expand and evolve. I give feedback to work made in sessions and always include discussion if teaching in a group and peer to peer learning. An invaluable part of teaching and something I really enjoy, is setting ideas and practice within an art historical context, so I always include images of work by artists both well known and lesser known, male and female, from a variety of cultures and dating from the contemporary back to the ancient and endeavor to generate discussion around these.
