Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an author, freelance marketer, and creative writing workshop leader represented by a leading UK literary agency. I have written five children's books and I'm currently working on a piece of adult fiction. My poem The Blundergaffe is published by Popshot Magazine, my YA short story The Time Tailor is published by Northern Gravy, and my short story Blind Date was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize.
I also work for a company that helps advance the careers of children's authors, connecting me with published authors, agents, and publishers, and I'm also a freelance copywriter and editor. I studied English Literature at Durham University.
Outside of writing, I love going on adventures - I have travelled to over 40 countries, trekked the Himalayas, gained a scuba diving certification, paraglided, lived in a campervan in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and more.
Teaching Experience:
I have tutored English Literature and creative writing for over ten years, and I have run face-to-face creative writing workshops for organisations such as New Writing North, Seven Stories and International Womens Day, as well as schools and libraries. My largest audience was one hundred children for a school in the North East of England!
Teaching Approach:
People think you can't teach creative writing, that it's a natural talent that you're born with - that's not true! Even professional authors like myself are constantly learning and growing by reading craft books and going on courses. So, I always encourage creativity and a passion for storytelling in all my students, whether they demonstrate a 'natural' ability or not. Everyone has a story to tell - it's just about finding the best way to tell it, because that's all creative writing is. Learning how to translate the idea in your head so that readers can understand it on a page.
