Personal Description:
Having begun photography seriously at the age of 18, I have 22 years of experience specialising in landscape work. During this time, I have exhibited my work and had images published in magazines. I love spending time exploring the Lake District with my camera, and I am constantly in awe of the changing qualities of the light and atmospheric conditions in the Lakeland fells and dales. For me, fell walking and mountaineering provide the most amazing, spontaneous photo opportunities, however, I am not averse to pre-planning a shoot at a specific viewpoint or location.
I have experience with a diverse range of photographic equipment and techniques, from large format film work and darkroom development and printing, to the digital workflow. In addition, I have working knowledge of historic photographic processes like cyanotype.
As well as my photography skills, I am a proficient videographer and sound recordist. I love the technical elements of all these disciplines, and constantly seek to improve my knowledge and practice. I find life gets boring when I'm not pushing myself to learn more!
Teaching Experience:
I have 2 years of experience as Course Leader for Level 3 Photography in further education, and also planned and taught popular adult evening classes in this role. I was graded outstanding by Ofsted for the teaching and learning provision in my department.
After leaving teaching in 2014 to move back to the North West, I studied towards an MA in Outdoor and Experiential Learning part-time, graduating with Distinction in early 2018. Now, I want to help people develop their photographic work through private tutoring and workshops.
Teaching Approach:
I am an open and friendly teacher with a good sense of humour. I like classes to be relaxed and fun, but structured enough for you to keep track of your learning. When necessary, I can create informative and eye-catching learning resources in a range of formats. I always put student needs first, so our initial discussion about your aims and ambitions is important to me. This allows me to design an effective course so you can achieve your goals, taking into account your preferred learning styles.
I strongly believe that a sound technical foundation allows a photographer to realise their vision more effectively, beginning with choosing the right equipment, through capturing a high-quality image, to doing careful digital editing. I can explain concepts in an engaging way using mini-workshops and demos, then help you to apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt through guided practical activities and projects. I am honest about students' work, but always offer fair constructive feedback to facilitate rapid improvement and development.
