Personal Description:
I'm a second year student at the University of the Free State state pursuing an LLB degree. I am passionate about studying and helping those who need assistance. I am a very patient person who understands that everyone's needs are different. I was the highest in 5 out of 7 subjects in my last year of study in high school and was the highest achiever during the course of that year. I believe I can help students achieve more than what I achieved. From primary, I've been the highest achiever till high school and in university I'm in the top 15% and have received invitation to join golden key. I am keen at providing adequate help to all prospectus students under my care.
Tutoring Experience:
From 2017-2020 I was tutoring grade 7s in maths and English
From 2020-2020 I was tutoring grade 10,11 and 12 in maths, physics, life sciences and English
From 2021-2021 I was tutoring law to my classmates every Saturdays and Sundays
Tutoring Approach:
• Questioning- I provide students with questions throughout the session after a few pages to see if they understood the content and I explain if they have not. This helps them actively engage in their learning.
• Silence- if my student is quiet, I give them a little bit more time to recall the information and piece it together instead of assuming that they do not know the answer.
• Positive Reinforcement- in case of silence, I provide positive reinforcement to help the student feel confident about their answers and praise their hard work and comment on where they did good.
•Socratic Method
(a) Drills- these are a series of questions that have 1 correct answer to help sharpen the student's thinking abilities as needed in exams.
(b) Alternation- I let the student be the tutor and explain the content to see if it is understood correctly.
(c) Application- I provide for scenarios/activities where they have to apply what they have learnt and this helps with the memorisation and understanding of the content
• Change of setting- I change the environment frequently to make my students feel at ease, should they be autistic and want the room to be the same, that will be provided as well.
• Drawings and diagrams- I provide my students with drawings and diagrams as some of them might be visual learners and drawings might be of great assistance.
• Introducing technology- students are exposed to using laptops and learn how to study online if they haven't, how to search for information and do electronic assignments.
• Foster Independence- I encourage my students to try and work out answers on their own. This will help them especially during exams as no one will be by their side for assistance.
• Encourage creativity- I encourage students to think outside the box as this will help better their understanding and not be limited with their capabilities.
• Introduce humour- as I have been a student and still am, I understand the importance of learning in an environment you're comfortable in.
• Requesting feedback- I request for students to help me help them by suggesting areas where i can help better their understanding. Should they be afraid to speak up, a suggestion box will be put up in class.
