Information About William - Queenstown tutor

Personal Description:

My name is Will. I have been travelling around New Zealand for a few months and I am now settling down in Queenstown. I am from England in the UK. New Zealand has always been a dream of mine to come and visit and explore its scenic and cultural beauty.
I love rugby (union) and cricket but enjoy all sports to some degree. I have always loved the values sport promotes, and believe passionately that sport brings people together. It’s good for the heart and soul.
I also love reading and history. I enjoy fiction (fantasy and science fiction as well as historical non-fiction).
I was inspired to work with children after my time abroad in the USA working at a summer camp. I readied their energy and enthusiasm was contagious and soon looked into teaching. Since then I have worked as a teaching assistant, a sports coach, summer school leader, as an activity camp manager and finally as teacher.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a teacher for 7 years back in England. I have experience with teaching children in a range of subjects and with a variety of needs (English as an additional language or Special Educational Needs).
I am very much into my educational research and my approach is based very much on the most reliable methods promoted in educational circles. My knowledge of how children is fundamental to my practice.

Tutoring Approach:

First of all, the child needs to feel safe and seen. They need to know they will not be made feel incompetent or useless, that they can trust me and I will help them to improve.
Building a rapport is fundamental to this process. Having a connection based on mutual respect but also using humour and banter to make the experience more enjoyable. Learning in a tutoring environment does not need to be too intense.
Finally, my approach will be tailored to the pretences of the family but it will based on the foundations of learning and the reinforcement of it through retrieval practice or direct teaching.
