Personal Description:
I am a semi-retired academic. I was a senior lecturer in German and Italian language and literature and taught various interdisciplinary courses in English, with an emphasis on Modernism. I have taught at secondary schools as well, namely teaching English as a second language. this included literature. I have a Phd in Comparative Literature from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
I can also offer tuition in writing essays, theses and dissertations proofreading, editing etc.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught language and literature for twenty odd years and have a relatively extensive knowledge of literature, not only in English. I have taught literature from Mediaeval literature through to post-war literature, again with a specific emphasis on Modernism, but can help students discover themselves through a given text.
I AM ALSO HAPPY TO OFFER MORE SERIOUS TUITION IN GERMAN AND ITALIAN LITERATURE, either in translation or by using original texts
Tutoring Approach:
I like to help a student find their own voice, and to critically engage with whatever has to be mastered. I am of the firm conviction that often students "don't know that they know" and my teaching method is what some call the Socratic method, i.e. by asking questions I help the student arrive at the answers or insights by themselves. I am opposed to parrot-fashion learning and like to see students being on a voyage of discovery in whatever they are learning, be it history, literature or a foreign language.

Kind regards
Wilhelm
Thank you
Wilhelm
Easy to get in touch with and has a friendly manner.
Student numbers stayed relatively consistent for the 8 weeks and some enquiries regarding enrolling in a follow-on German class.
Thank you Wilhelm!
He has given me a lot of help studying James Baxter's poems and he is a very nice person. :)
His teaching method, of questioning, assists to expand my understanding of grammar, when reading or writing a piece of work in what an author is saying, their reasonings and how he/she is saying it. The nuances and subtleties of characters, the moral and how relevant they are to the story and time. All in the pursuit of clarifying grammar and how effective it is when correctly applied.
I have learnt so much from in such a short time that it boggles my mind. Wilhelm tutors me once a week which leaves the remaining days to digest what my mind has taken in and to flex my writing muscles by putting theory into practise.
He goes out of his way to get to the sessions and I truly appreciate that. I look forward to continuing our sessions with him assisting me to build self-confidence with writing in particular with grammar.
Thanks Wilhelm and see you Tuesday!
