Information About Sophia - Auckland tutor

Personal Description:

Before becoming a teacher, I was an energy engineer and a professional writer in Tokyo.

I loved maths and physics in high school because I had such amazingly inspirational teachers. However I did learn, as I got older, that I was lucky because I have met a heartbreaking amount of people who loved maths and physics but hate it now thanks to their teacher/s. The school system is definitely geared towards a certain type of student, so I decided to use my creative skills to become a tutor to help some of these excluded students feel seen and acknowledged because no student should ever feel like they're stupid and should just give up.

Tutoring Experience:

I'm a registered secondary school physics teacher, and I've been tutoring NCEA and Cambridge Maths and Physics at all levels since 2023.

I've also previously taught Y10 Science, Y11 Science, Y12 Physics, and Y13 Physics at Mt Roskill Grammar School and Diocesan School for Girls.

Tutoring Approach:

My lessons are for high school children, and are 1 hour long. I also provide 1hr-long group lessons for up to 3 students for $60/student, and casual lessons.

The students are in charge of what content they'll like help with to give them a sense of control over their learning.

From there it's problem solving, diagrams, using visually-heavy resources and references based on the child's interests, and frequent discussions.

Lessons typically finish with homework and the lesson's content summarised to me by the student to display understanding or lack there of.
