Personal Description:
I have recently begun my postgraduate degree in physical chemistry, after finishing my BSc with a major in chemistry. (I really like chemistry). I've also studied biology, physics, and maths up to NCEA level 3, and in stage I and II university.
Tutoring Experience:
I have tutored at various levels in NCEA since finishing high school. My best subject being chemistry, I have also tutored maths, physics and biology at levels 1-3 NCEA.
Tutoring Approach:
When it comes to learning science, I know exactly what it's like to be in class, and not understand anything of what is going on. Science is not simply about learning names and dates and memorising things, it's about understanding concepts and ideas that build up on each other.
NCEA science subjects are designed in such a way that you really have to know everything before moving on to the next chapter, so if you are behind, everything in class will sound like gibberish.
My approach to tutoring, is to help you fully understand each topic before moving on to the next, and setting you up to understand the rest of the topic based on foundational principles.
I’ll do so by focusing on why something works a certain way. In calculus, for example, the whole idea is continuous change where you can derive one equation to find the rate of change, or integrate it to find the area under the curve. This sounds complicated, but if we look at why this happens, rather than just memorising it, learning the rest will become easier.
