Personal Description:
Hi, I am a Ph.D. graduate from Victoria University and currently tutor at Massey University. I am an attentive and approachable tutor, from what my students have told me. I’d love to do anything to make math more relatable and fun for students! If you’re looking for sessions where you really enjoy doing math and improve your performance like never before, I can be of help :)
At present, I am teaching lessons online only. The one-one zoom sessions work really well according to the feedback from my students.
Tutoring Experience:
I have tutored school students of Grades 11-13, since 2014. I have tutored at Victoria University from 2017-2020 and this helped me realise where students need help in schools and what they’ll need in order to thrive at school and later at uni. Tutoring at Massey university has also been an eye opening experience in understanding and meeting students' needs.
Tutoring Approach:
I am a big fan of one-on-one tutoring as I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all ideology. Hence, my approach to students would depend highly on how they receive ideas. I also make sure that I and my student are on the same page as to what outcome we expect from this subject. Generally, I employ a two-part strategy and make slight tweaks in the implementation depending on the student’s needs.
The first part consists of explaining the idea - the whys and hows of the concept. I believe this opens the mind of the student and makes math more captivating. As a student, I always found it boring when I had to study formulas by rote without knowing where they came from (duh!).
I’d keep this first part brief enough to not lose the student’s attention and then move on the to part that improves performance aka ‘practice’. This part involves showing them examples, asking them to answer similar problems and correct them. This will play a major role in boosting the students confidence to solve questions.
That’s not all though, as there is another nasty thing called Exam that really tests your nerves. This is wherepractice exams come in. I’d want my students to attempt exams from previous years. And by attempt I mean sitting down to write exams in a fashion similar to how they write actual exams - with a fixed time slot and no distractions. This is then discussed on the next lesson.
I readily welcome questions and highly appreciate when my students ask them. Don’t bother that my native language isn’t English, I’m as fluent as a native speaker. Trust me, as I started to read and write English before my mother tongue!
