Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Joan and I am currently a PhD student at the University of Otago, majoring in Physiology.
My most recent qualification is my Bachelors of Biomedical Science with Honours (BBiomedSciHons) majoring in Functional Human Biology, where I graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Otago in 2021. This is inclusive of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology topics.
Tutoring Experience:
Over the last six years, I have been a freelance tutor, offering tuition in English, Biology and Chemistry at both a secondary and tertiary level. Thus, I am familiar with the following syllabi: ATAR, IGCSE, A Level, NCEA, International Baccalaureate (IB), and Health Science First Year (HSFY).
For HSFY, I offer help in the following subjects: CHEM191, CELS191, HUBS191, HUBS192 and BIOC192.
I currently work as a lab demonstrator and a tutor at the University of Otago, and have done so for the last three years. I also currently work for an online tutoring company, TutorMe, which provides immediate online academic help to students worldwide. I primarily offer help in chemistry, biology, anatomy, and physiology-based topics and subjects.
I previously worked four years for an online English company, Bibo, which provides online English tuition to non-native speakers around the world of all ages. This involves all aspects of the English language - conversational skills, literature analysis, grammar and vocabulary.
Tutoring Approach:
After each session, students are provided a set of lesson notes which are generated during the session. I acknowledge that everyone learns and processes information differently, and thus I try to cater my teaching towards each individual. Thus, each lesson note is tailored towards each student and their learning strengths.
I believe that whilst rote memorization has proven to work at times, understanding the content and having a good exam technique is the key to excelling academically. Extra notes and worksheets are provided to students to aid their learning.
