Personal Description:
Hi, I’m Jay, a passionate tutor with a strong academic background in history, sociology, and English. As someone who excelled in history, English, and social studies during my studies, I understand how overwhelming essays and exams can feel- and I’m here to make that process easier.
My strengths lie in helping students improve their essay writing, from brainstorming and structuring arguments to polishing final drafts. I also support students with exam preparation and tackling challenging assessments. Most of my experience has been with primary school students, but I’m equally confident working with older students who need guidance to reach their academic goals.
I tailor each session to suit your individual learning style and pace, focusing on creating a comfortable, encouraging environment where you can ask questions, refine your skills, and build confidence.
If you’re looking for a supportive tutor to help you navigate your studies, I’d love to help! Let’s work together to make your academic journey a success.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a broad range of experience working with students across different age groups and skill levels. I started out tutoring primary school students, helping them build strong foundations in reading, writing, and critical thinking. Over time, I expanded my focus to include editing and providing feedback on assessments for high school and university students, particularly in history and English.
My expertise lies in guiding students through essay writing, research projects, and exam preparation. I’m particularly familiar with NCEA assessments in history and English, offering targeted support to help students meet curriculum requirements and achieve their goals.
Whether it’s refining a draft, breaking down complex topics, or building confidence in their abilities, I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment tailored to each student’s needs.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to start with an informal meeting to get to know the student and, for younger learners, their parents as well. This gives me a chance to understand their goals, challenges, and what they hope to achieve through tutoring.
My teaching style is student-focused, adapting to each individual’s learning style and pace. I prioritize fostering critical thinking, building confidence, and helping students develop skills they can use independently. Whether it’s essay writing, preparing for assessments, or tackling tricky concepts, I aim to make each session engaging and productive.
My ongoing education and practical experience have shaped my approach, and I’m always looking for ways to refine my strategies to meet the needs of my students.
