Personal Description:
Hi, I am Elena and I am currently a second-year Ph.D. Physiology student at the University of Otago
My most recent qualification is a Bachelor of Science - First Class (Honours) in Physiology and I have also completed my Bachelor of Science, majoring in Physiology and minoring in Anatomy. I have completed additional papers like biological anthropology and cellular anatomy/physiology which have proven to be useful in my degree.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring for just under 5 years now and have experience in the following subjects at different levels: biology, and secondary-level chemistry. Although I only have first-hand experience teaching at an NCEA level, I am familiar with the IGSCE (~GSCE) curriculum and can be adaptive to other forms of examination such as international baccalaureate (IB), etc.
As my research is predominantly based on Physiology, I thoroughly enjoy teaching biology-based papers the most. Such as NCEA Biology (L1 - L3), and Health Science First Year Papers from Otago University or Auckland University.
I am currently working as a Lab Demonstrator at UoO, and am thoroughly enjoying this opportunity. As a lab demonstrator, I possess the personality traits that make a good demonstrator, such as patience, confidence, and enthusiasm.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to create worksheets for you to use and send you notes that are organized so that you can look back on them when you need them!
I enjoy teaching more conceptual ideas rather than fact learning and memorization. This gives us a more deconstructed way and helps students take their time with absorbing the information. I know that understanding the overall concept before the little details is more helpful in the long run and is better than remembering and throwing little facts here and there!
