Information About Colton - Auckland tutor

Personal Description:

My love for tutoring others came from my own personal academic struggles at an early age, to which I eventually found a learning and teaching style that worked wonders for me and others I have taught. In higschool I took Chemistry and Physics, partly because I enjoyed setting myself a challenge, but ended up engrossed in the content. I completed a degree in Biochemistry in 2018, only to switch lanes and pursue a career in aviation, which I am now halfway through and loving.

Tutoring Experience:

My first tutoring experience was in Rwanda, Africa, where I taught English to a small group of orphaned boys over a 3 week period. After that, I loved it so much I wanted to step it up a notch, so I went to Kenya to teach Maths and Physics at a local high school in the centre of the largest slum in Africa - Kibera. In my final year at University, I was emplyed as a Student Demonstrator - basically a tutor for first year labs, which i loved. Following that I have recently tutored on and off in level 1 NCEA science, one of my students being my stepsister who had struggled with science in the past only to exceed all expectations this past year and blow her previous science grades out of the water. Since being a full time student myself I have had somewhat of a break from tutoring, but I am excited to get back into it and meet some more amazing students.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach has been to acknowledge to the student that 'starting' is and will always be the hard part. Actually doing work once in a rhythm is easy - and this mentality can be applied to any facet of life's endeavours. So in a way, finding and approaching me on this website is the hard part over, I'm here to guide you through the rest and together we can slowly improve what you feel needs work. I'm a visual learner / tutor - I draw, I use YouTube videos, I use pneumonics, analogies - anything to help form a more visual connection with whatever it is you are trying to understand. With that being said, a good teacher is always one that is adaptable to the needs of the student, so I'm here to listen too, if there is a preferred way of learning or teaching that I can implement in my approach - I'm all ears.
