Personal Description:
Hi! I'm a Hutt Valley local who has recently completed his PhD in Canada. I've recently found a bit of spare time on my hands, and I've always enjoyed teaching mathematics, so here I am!
I'm a friendly and easygoing person. If you're uncertain about anything, just ask! I'm always ready to listen and will happily answer your questions. Asking is the only way to learn!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my tutoring :).
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a tutor in various forms for many years now. I have tutored at Vic during my undergrad and Masters (2014-2019) and at the University of Waterloo (UW) in Canada during my PhD (2022-2025). Throughout this time, I've tutored a wide range of courses, from introductory first year courses all the way up to third and fourth year courses, and even a graduate level course as well. Needless to say, I'm very comfortable tutoring at any level.
During this time, I have also done some private tutoring, and know how this differs from being a tutor for a course.
I've also worked as an instructor twice at UW, so I know a lot of what goes on behind the scenes in running courses. I have also taken several teacher training courses. While these do differ from private tutoring, I've definitely picked up several skills that transfer well in this space, and plus, I may have a better idea what your lecturer might be thinking ;).
Tutoring Approach:
My general teaching philosophy is that no two students learn in the same way. If you take lessons with me, we will sit down together to figure out what works best for you.
This also includes concepts: if you find something just doesn't quite stick, I will try to find multiple approaches to explain the idea. I find that inevitably something will stick, but what that is may require a little trial and error!
That said I do think there is one aspect of learning that is universally useful: practice! I will try mix some practice during sessions, though we can tailor this as needed. I'm happy to also provide additional problems, if you would like more practice outside of our sessions.
