Information About Val - Athenry tutor

Personal Description:

I'm Val, a maths tutor from Galway. I love maths and the ways it shapes the world. I got H1 in maths in my leaving cert, and I'm currently working full time as a tutor. I'm passionate about teaching and really enjoy seeing a student thrive and overcome their challenges. I find that so many students become discouraged in their own maths ability, and convince themselves they don't have what it takes to succeed at maths, but in reality, they are far better than they think, and just need the right help to find their way with the subject.
I am also garda vetted and have completed a level one safeguarding course, as well as being experienced in working with neurodivergent students.

Tutoring Experience:

I have past experience giving maths grinds throughout my leaving cert years, as well as years of experience professionally teaching sailing and powerboating to children and adults. I was also an older member of my local scout group throughout my time in secondary school, where I gained a lot of experience sharing skills with the newer members.

Approach to Grinds:

I take a very practical, student focused approach to maths. I like to start by getting an idea of each students individual strengths and weaknesses, and then focus on the topics that they struggle most in. Depending on the students convidence level, I will start anywhere from the very beginning and foundations of a topic, all the way to exam level questions. I think the best way to learn is through mistakes, so I let my students work on a question until they are finished or ask for help before correcting any mistakes and letting them try again.
