Personal Description:
I give one-to-one maths grinds. All my grinds are by Zoom so location is no obstacle. I have been giving maths grinds to LC and JC students since 2014. In 2020 I took early retirement from a career as a geophysicist to concentrate fully on maths grinds. I live with my wife Siobhan near Stephenstown Pond south of Dundalk. I am known to have a passion for maths. My daughter and two sons have all completed their Leaving Cert. Siobhan and myself have plenty of time for walking, gardening and other activities, I also have plenty of time to devote to planning and preparation for each of my maths grind students.
Tutoring Experience:
I have many years of experience giving grinds to family members and friends. In 2014 I commenced giving grinds on a regular basis. Since then I have given one-to-one maths grinds on a regular weekly basis to many students in preparation for both Leaving Cert and Junior Cert. This has been very successful with many siblings and friends of former students coming for grinds on the recommendation of former students. In many instances I have given grinds to three members of the same family. I have worked with a number of students all the way from 1st year to 6th year. I am very familiar with what’s required for both the Junior Cert and the Leaving Cert exams.
Approach to Grinds:
My grinds are usually one-to-one. Initially I will build a rapport with and gauge the academic level of each student and adapt my teaching methods to suit their ability and personality. My main aim is to instill confidence and encourage regular practice. My grinds will usually focus on a student’s weaker topics early in the year with an increased emphasis on exam questions as we get closer to exam time. I advise students on good study habits, I emphasise the importance of planning and I share study tips that I have found helpful in achieving my own exam success. For younger students I gradually introduce the idea of independent learning. For the more mature students I encourage a higher degree of independent learning which students will need in adult life and at third level and I encourage students to use grinds as a resource to cover areas of difficulty. I always do my best to work with each student to maximize their potential and to achieve the best results possible.
