Personal Description:
Hi there, my name is Sarah and I'm from Co. Kildare. I provide grinds in History, Religion, English and Politics and Society.
I graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2018 with a joint honours Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science, in which I achieved a 2.1 grade. I have also recently completed a Masters in Museum and Heritage Studies from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, in which I also achieved a 2.1 grade. During my school years, I also studied Religion and English to Leaving Certificate level and achieved an A grade in both, therefore I teach these subjects too.
I really enjoy helping students of all ages to reach their full potential and to achieve the results they need and deserve. I'm friendly, bubbly, and outgoing, and know how to put the student at ease. In my spare time, I enjoy singing in my local choir and running with my local community run club!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been giving grinds on and off for the last 8 years, mainly to Senior Cycle students in the subjects of Religion and History. I am also able to help students with study methodology and study plans, regardless of the subject. I would really like to share my knowledge and experience with Politics and Society too.
I currently volunteer with Fáilte Isteach as a Senior English Tutor, helping new arrivals to Ireland to learn conversational and practical English.
I have also given grinds through the Trinity Voluntary Tuition Programme, to students from disadvantaged areas.
For the 2018 summer season, I was appointed the Activities Co-Ordinator for Education First English Language School in Dublin, which involved me interacting with senior students on a daily basis and organising fun activities for them to do. I was also a Residential Supervisor in the evenings, and supervised the 13-16 year olds in the mornings and evenings. I really enjoyed this experience - I feel I have developed a passion for working with young people and helping them to reach their potential and have fun while learning!
I have previously worked at children's summer camps aswell, dealing with ages 5-16, although I am very comfortable with all age groups.
Approach to Grinds:
I like to first assess the student's learning abilities and see where they are in the course of their studies in the particular subject. I then set a plan of material to cover over the course of the grinds, depending on the student's needs. My grinds are a mixture of discussion and practice exercises.
When it comes to the subjects of English, Religion, History and Politics and Society, it is of upmost importance to develop the students opinions on topics, and teach them to form a coherent written argument. I help the student to do this by eliciting the information through discussion, and then we look at the relevant materials and do some practice exercises.
I prefer to give homework, however if the student feels that this is too much on their plate, I am happy to just do exercises with them during the grind.
Grinds are by nature quite jam-packed, but I like to create a light, fun and engaging atmosphere - a cup of tea or coffee can make all the difference! I also bring in contemporary material to keep things interesting.
All in all, I am most interested in tailoring the grind to the student's specific needs.
