Personal Description:
I am a recent graduate of Trinity College Dublin (TCD), with the award of a BA (Mod) in Mathematics (First-Class Honours). My undergraduate thesis concerned computable structure theory. I also completed two research internships with the School of Mathematics, both funded by the Hamilton Trust and occurring over a period of 6 weeks in the summers of 2022 and 2023, respectively. These concerned topics such as genericity and forcing in computable structure theory, and their application to the study of degree spectra realisable by structures, continuing the study of my undergraduate thesis. I maintain an active interest in research and have attended research conferences abroad. I have also collaborated with professors on small informal projects.
My results in the Junior (2016) and Leaving (2019) Certificate Examinations were the highest awarded to any student in my academic year-group within my school. That was recognised by the entrance exhibition award at TCD. I also participated in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad, and was awarded a prize for my results in the Problem Solving for Irish Second-Level Mathematicians competition in 2017.
Tutoring Experience:
I have experience in teaching mathematics to junior-cycle, senior-cycle, and undergraduate students. In particular, I have taught mathematics on the junior and senior-cycle courses to groups of up to 25 students as well as to individual students. Since the third year of my undergraduate degree, I have also graded homeworks and in-house exams for mathematics modules taken by second and third year undergraduates at TCD.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach is adaptive and values individualised instruction. In general, I initially determine and prioritise misunderstandings and omissions in the student's comprehension and knowledge, and then simultaneously establish a fundamental and intuitive understanding of the examinable mathematics, as well as competency in the common algorithms tested in the examination. Past papers from the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and other examination-style questions will be used extensively once an understanding of the topics has been established. Techniques informed by trends in SEC marking schemes to maximise the mark obtained in the examination will be the focus of the lessons thereafter.
