Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Fine Art with 4 years studying 18th century printmaking, art history and critical theory. I have two published works of fiction and a myriad of art sales and gallery appearances that have given me unique insight into the demands that literature and art worlds have. I have been working as a writer and artist since I could hold a pencil!
From college at 17 to graduation at 22, I worked part time a a barrista, where i learned great communication is the means to better understanding of anything from coffee orders to Degas. Post college I fell into the world of culinary art, exploring what made the taste buds tick while working on my own art from my studio in Galway City.
I currently am a medical administrator in Galway City, using my people skills to help every patient in the clinic that i manage for the Bradley Healthcare Group. In addition to that, I provide online support to fiction authors via the Irish writers and publishers group, I teach children how to play card games at a local game store and I spend my free time engrossed in my own artworks and writings.
Tutoring Experience:
I provided seminars for multiple Irish Universities for peer to peer education such as DCU, NUIG, Athlone IT, and Trinity College. I was a Tudor to first year art students via GMIT SU's PASS programme and served on the SU for 2 years.
I have always taken a teaching or training roll in any job i have worked in. Being known for understanding and taking on new topics easily, my work always involved me handing that knowledge to other via training and education new staff members and work experience students.
I currently teach a course in creative writing using the "On Writing and World building" method and the "Three Act Structure" method.
Approach to Grinds:
The Leaving Certificate English and Art papers are a literal breeze for anyone who can understand and unlock the questions that the paper is truly asking. My tutorial style is to teach young people how to interpret and answer any question on these papers. A skill I wish was taught to me at that age but wasn't until i was in my later years at college. Once a student understands the question, any answer can be formulated. Rather than depending on rehearsed and memorized notes that may not truly answer the questions being asked. Tutees of my English and Art papers can not only learn the subjects, but also learn more about their academic skills. At university level this is known as learning to learn. And many students of art and English can benefit from this approach.
Many students have fear of what they don't understand, just like adults. But when a student can learn how to learn there is nothing left to hold them back from accessing the knowledge and skills available to them. With inspiration, and a good routine, a student can capture lightning in a bottle when they understand what is being asked of them.
Most frustration from a student is when they believe that a tutor or teacher is only there to tell them they are wrong and why that is. This leads to a belief that education doesnt work for them and that they cannot engage in even a subject that they love. But my approach to grinds is a collaborative one. Where the student and tutor set expectations and goals together and achieve them in a reasonable time decided by the parent.
