Personal Description:

I am an experienced, passionate and dedicated post-primary English and Irish teacher, with extensive knowledge at both higher and ordinary level for Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle.

I am a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where I received an honours Professional Masters in Education, and of University College Dublin where I received an honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Irish. I am currently teaching in a Dublin based post-primary school.

Tutoring Experience:

I have a plethora of experience working with all types of students, including SEN. As I have been immersed in the English Leaving Cert curriculum for some time now, I am fully up to date with all aspects of it, and take joy in teaching Shakespeare, poetry, the comparative, and comprehensive style questions. I am a creative person at heart, and so I especially enjoy working on Paper.1 topics such as creative writing, letter writing and debates. I also have a huge passion for teaching Gaeilge. Growing up in the Gaeltacht every summer has awarded me with a real grá and appreciation for our language. My extensive knowledge of the Junior and Leaving Cert course means that I can navigate students with ease and confidence around the different questions such as the Aiste, litríocht breise, filíocht and prós.

I have experience teaching Higher Level and Ordinary Level English and Irish in two competitive post-primary schools in Dublin. I have experience in correcting exam papers and have also worked as a teacher abroad.

Approach to Grinds:

I think that every student has a unique way of learning and it is important to tailor my teaching to an approach that suits each individual student. In saying that, I do believe that when answering an English paper a certain structure for each answer is necessary. I like to teach this structure and then nurture the student in developing their own style and creativeness around this in order for them to fully understand and take pride in their writing.

In terms of Irish, I believe that confidence is key. You are better than you think you are! And it is my job to unlock that potential and break the barrier of Irish being "too difficult". As the Irish oral exam counts for 40% I think it's important to bring students out of their shell and give them the skills needed to do well in this area.
