Personal Description:
I am conscientious, organised and passionate about what I do. I am confident in my teaching ability and feel that tutoring children is such a rewarding experience as the growth in their confidence and skills can be seen from one session to the next. 1:1 tutoring can have a significant impact on their progress. I have seen this first hand with the children I have tutored over the years. I am dedicated, hard-working and would take great pleasure in helping your child to fulfil their academic potential.
Tutoring Experience:
Since graduating from Liverpool Hope University with a PGCE Primary with Merit in 2011 I have been teaching full-time in Liverpool. My first teaching position was in a good school as judged by Ofsted on the Wirral, where I taught for three years. During my NQT year I covered PPA throughout the school from EYFS to Year 6 teaching Languages – German, Spanish and French and also teaching subjects such as Art, History and Geography depending on the class teacher’s requirements. I taught Year 1 for two days a week alongside the deputy head-teacher until the summer term when I took Year 1 full-time after the deputy acquired the headship. I then taught Year 1 for two years but I also taught Year 3 for one afternoon a week as part of my Geography subject leader role.
In 2014 I applied for a permanent teaching position in an outstanding school in an affluent area of South Liverpool and I was successful in gaining this position. During 2015-2016 I also applied to do my masters in Liverpool Hope University and got offered a place. I graduated in July 2016 with the degree of MA Developmental Psychology & Education having attained a first in my masters dissertation. I taught at this school from 2014-2021 teaching EYFS, Year 3 and Year 5 (equivalent to Juniors, 2nd and 4th class here). I moved home to Ireland in February 2021 and I am currently teaching 6th class in a school in Waterford where I am also an assistant principal. I am highly qualified and experienced with teaching primary age children and tutored in England for five years before returning home. Sessions will be tailored to your child's individual needs and will enable them to progress further and enhance their basic skills.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach to tutoring involves building children's confidence and self-esteem through the use of positive praise and constructive feedback. I use a range of questioning strategies to make sure that children are involved in my sessions and I ensure that all children are working to the best of their ability, trying their best and pushing themselves to reach their targets and get to the next level. I instill a positive ‘can do’ attitude in my classroom and encourage the children to persevere with tasks even when it is a challenge, this is something I bring with me to my tutoring sessions. I am supportive, calm and patient and ensure that children know they can ask me any question at any time during the session to further their understanding as this is something that holds a lot of children back within a school setting. Making the children feel at ease and developing a good working relationship with them is a strength of mine and this is a key factor in successful tutoring.
The children I have tutored in the past were aware of the targets they had been set, knew their steps to success and strived to get there. I evaluate every session I teach and adapt my planning to suit the children’s needs, helping them to achieve and progress further. I plan lessons that are fun, interactive, engaging and suit the children's age range for example a 1st class child I tutored loved princesses and so I planned our writing activities around fairy-tales as this engaged the child's interest. Whereas a 3rd class child I tutored loved History and liked to be challenged so I planned comprehension activities that required deep level thought and use of inferential skills to extend this child's understanding.
