Personal Description:
I am a third year Health Sciences student currently enrolled at Queen's University. I graduated from Cardinal Carter Catholic High School with both the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and the IB diploma. Throughout high school, I was on the Principle's List, and achieved the top ten highest average in my grade from grade 9-12. I have continued to maintain high academic standings in the pursuit of my undergraduate degree. Tutoring students has been a passion of mine since high school. Student progress and success is extremely important to me, and I will be dedicated to helping my students reach their goals! As an aspiring medical student, I understand the importance of academic excellence and participating in extracurricular activities to become a more well rounded person, therefore, I hope to use my experience to help my tutees not only academically, but with networking, communication, time management and leadership skills.
Tutoring Experience:
I've tutored piano, biology, chemistry, psychology, reading and writing. My tutees come from a variety of age groups ranging from elementary school student to students currently completing their bachelor's degree. For each student, I tailor my tutor sessions based on the specific needs of the student, and their learning style. For example, some students enjoy student led tutor sessions, where they come to me with questions every week and we work on those questions together, while other students prefer lessons.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is specifically tailored to different students. I understand that students have very different learning styles. For instance, some students are visual learners, so I will use diagrams and pictures to help them understand concepts. Other students thrive by learning through analogies, so I would come up with comparisons that relate academic concepts to aspects of every day life. My tutor sessions are often lead by students, which I have found to be beneficial because it shows me that the student is dedicated to learning, and are focused on trying to understand difficult concepts. Self-directed learning is becoming increasingly important especially with online learning platforms becoming more accessible, therefore it is important to me that my students learn how to be effective learners. Effective learning strategies will aid every student in the long run.
I also supplement student learning with lesson plans that add on to what the student is learning at school, to deepen understanding of concepts, and also extend into more challenging topics.
